Oregon Convention Center

Business Overview: As the largest convention center in the Pacific Northwest, OCC strives to be the greenest events facility in the world while also influencing others in adopting sustainable habits and initiatives.  The facility's leadership in green buildings and sustainability operations is exemplified in earning both LEED Platinum and the APEX/ASTM certification in 2014 and in achieving a 69% landfill diversion rate.

Role: Sustainability Program Assistant with a focus on waste reduction and communications  

  • Assisted in the development and coordination facility’s sustainability goals and communications efforts
  • Improved stakeholder communication and storytelling of facility’s sustainability efforts

Sustainability Wall

Project team member in transforming sustainability wall from award showcase to exhibit display.  Display features photographs, infographics, and narrative to build awareness of the facility's sustainability story to clients, potential clients, attendees, employees, and members of the community.  

Role: 

  • Researched, gleaned and organized over five years worth of disjointed information and data to formulate timeline, key accomplishments, and messaging
  • Accumulated waste data for infographic design
  • Contributed to the selection of  exhibit photos

Outcomes:

  • Recorded institutional knowledge of facility's sustainability efforts
  • Beautiful display to build awareness of the facility's sustainability story with clients, potential clients, attendees, employees, and members of the community

Front of House Compost Program 

Co-projector coordinator for the launch of the facility's front of house compost program.  Launch included selecting bin and signage design, ensuring all service ware served throughout the building was compostable, and staff training.  Public education included infographic signage placed by recycling receptacles as well as instructional signage on digital display monitors throughout the building.

Outcomes:

  • Established OCC as one of only a few event facility's in the country to offer this disposal options to guests
  • Increase in facility's compost rate TBD

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Directed design and generated messaging for mural project in facility's parking garage. to bring awareness to the new electric vehicle charging stations.

Client and Exhibitor Communication Materials

Directed the overhaul of sustainability materials for clients and exhibitors, including the development of the "Working Towards Zero Waste" identity.  

Outcome:

  • Materials have acted as key resources for enhancing the understanding of waste reduction expectations and opportunities

Energy Efficiency Employee Engagement Campaign

Coordinated communication strategies for first ever employee energy efficiency campaign.  

Outcome:

  • A 10% energy reduction for the entire facility, double the original goal

Box Lunch Sustainability Station

Revamped design of sustainability stations used to sort waste from events serving boxed lunches.  The goal of the new design was to move away from a system of guests leave box lunch waste for OCC staff to sort, to one where guests are engaged in the sorting process. 

Outcome:

  • Design that engages event guests in the sorting process; providing an educational opportunity as well as saving OCC staff time and reducing costs
  • Recorded system for set up and for staff to guest engagement
